Application
of ICT in manifold directions not only altered the horizons of library services
but also document management irrespective of the types which practically precipitated
the term information management. It was further altered to a new and recent
expression idiom known as knowledge management with the proliferation of
information through web. Knowledge in true sense of the term is categorized
into three types such as, Explicit Knowledge, Embedded Knowledge and Tacit
Knowledge. Knowledge Management has become a new research area in comparison to
other research areas such as data processing, information management, and
network management. The innermost assignment of a library is to accumulate,
systematize, preserve, and endow with access to knowledge and information. To
arrive to this gigantic mission the libraries requires preserving valuable
records of culture that can be passed down to succeeding generations. Libraries
through out the ages have proved to be essential link in this communication among
past, present, and future. Libraries ensure for preservation of recorded
knowledge whether print or electronic for effective dissemination of knowledge when
required. The paper discusses various activities involved in information
management and knowledge management including its creation, impetus on library
services and technological issues

IMPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND ITS’ TOOLS IN TECHNOLOGY BASED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
ICT applications in Library and Information Service domain not only altered
the library services but also opened avenues for document management leading
thereby, propagation of the term information management and subsequently to
knowledge management with the proliferation of information on web. Explicit,
Embedded and Tacit, the three panoptic group of knowledge has predominant impact
in libraries. Arriving to the massive missions like, accumulation, systematic
organisations, preservation and effective dissemination of knowledge, the
libraries require adequate professional competencies along with
infrastructures. Preservation of knowledge and its management from valuable
records of culture connect to succeeding generations and the Libraries through
out the ages have proved to be essential intermediary in establishing communication
among past, present, and future. Further, it adopts multiple knowledge
management tools to ensure preservation of knowledge both in print or
electronic. The paper discusses various dimensions and activities involved in
information management and knowledge management including its creation, impetus
on library services and technological issues including various knowledge
management tools for effective organization of knowledge and its dissemination.
OPEN ARCHIVES INITIATIVES: A GATEWAY TO WEB-BASED SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION
The essence of the
open archives approach is to enable access to Web-accessible material through
interoperable repositories for metadata sharing, publishing and archiving. OAI
develops and promotes a low-barrier interoperability framework and associated
standards based upon open protocols. In the OAI model, a data provider maintains one or more
repositories through web servers that support the OAI-PMH as a means of
exposing metadata; a service provider
issues OAI-PMH requests to data providers and uses the metadata as a basis for
building value-added services. With the emerging of the Internet during 1990s,
as a blooming star in the galaxy of information, the long cherished desire for
accessing to the vast gamut of information in the required field free of cost
by the scholars could be fulfilled.
Internet, a true powerful communication stream has altered the entire
gamut of identifying, acquiring, and sharing of knowledge in the global sphere
and has also created a tremendous impact in publishing industries. The constant
increasing inter-disciplinary research, multi dimensional and relevant
information of the scholars in alternation to the traditional publishing
propagated for precipitation to the Open Archives Initiatives. The paper throws
light on the Open Access Initiatives
MARKETING OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICE: TRENDS AND ISSUES IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT
From the dawn of
civilization, marketing has become an indispensable ingredient of the society
to being closure the products and customer. It can be established as a process
of exchange of relationships in the transaction and marketing of information,
though a new horizon in the marketing environment primarily is influenced by
perception, environmental, cultural conditions and trends. Spiraling cost of
publications, trimming budget allocation, necessities of up-to-the-minute
information of the user communities, and increasing threat from the information
industries are some of the basic issues which made imperative for adopting of
the marketing techniques of the products of Libraries. Proper
planning, designing, marketing of information products and overall its use as a
source of inspiration must be made available in a viable platform for the users
to have a seamless access to it with least cost. Increasing realization of the
role of information has caused in the establishment of information systems to
provide a galaxy of variety of information services and products. Proper
marketing of services needs sufficient outlets. The value and need based
quality of Information Products using all technological supports must reach the
clienteles so as to allow the user community to derive utmost satisfaction from
using the products. The paper throws light on the marketing of information
products and its trends and issues in the electronic era
