MAGNITUDE AND ACTIVITIES OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND IT’S APPLICATION IN 21ST CENTURY LIBRARIES

Application of ICT in manifold directions not only altered the horizons of library services but also document management irrespective of the types which practically precipitated the term information management. It was further altered to a new and recent expression idiom known as knowledge management with the proliferation of information through web. Knowledge in true sense of the term is categorized into three types such as, Explicit Knowledge, Embedded Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge. Knowledge Management has become a new research area in comparison to other research areas such as data processing, information management, and network management. The innermost assignment of a library is to accumulate, systematize, preserve, and endow with access to knowledge and information. To arrive to this gigantic mission the libraries requires preserving valuable records of culture that can be passed down to succeeding generations. Libraries through out the ages have proved to be essential link in this communication among past, present, and future. Libraries ensure for preservation of recorded knowledge whether print or electronic for effective dissemination of knowledge when required. IMPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND ITS’ TOOLS IN TECHNOLOGY BASED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Further, it adopts multiple knowledge management tools to ensure preservation of knowledge both in print or electronic. OPEN ARCHIVES INITIATIVES: A GATEWAY TO WEB-BASED SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION

The essence of the open archives approach is to enable access to Web-accessible material through interoperable repositories for metadata sharing, publishing and archiving. OAI develops and promotes a low-barrier interoperability framework and associated standards based upon open protocols. In the OAI model, a data provider maintains one or more repositories through web servers that support the OAI-PMH as a means of exposing metadata; a service provider issues OAI-PMH requests to data providers and uses the metadata as a basis for building value-added services. With the emerging of the Internet during 1990s, as a blooming star in the galaxy of information, the long cherished desire for accessing to the vast gamut of information in the required field free of cost by the scholars could be fulfilled.  Internet, a true powerful communication stream has altered the entire gamut of identifying, acquiring, and sharing of knowledge in the global sphere and has also created a tremendous impact in publishing industries. USER’S APPROACH IN GOVERNMENT HRANGBANA COLLEGE, MIZORAM IN NORTH EAST, INDIA: A CASE STUDY

Users’ attitude, consequent upon the admittance of ICT in the libraries has witnessed a dramatic change as the need changed from traditional to electronic form. Need based, authentic, reliable, pinpointed information are the call of the hour for growth and development of teaching and research. However, traditional libraries cannot be ruled out who support with the proliferated information to the users in spite of the fact that, the libraries whether academic, public or special satisfy with the information depending upon the users’ need. The academic libraries based on the types of institution disseminate information to its users. The present study relates to an analytical study on the theme of the users’ attitude of the Govt. Hrangbana college library in Mizoram including the discussions on the collection development, information need, library finance, library resources and services provided to its users
