The essence of the
open archives approach is to enable access to Web-accessible material through
interoperable repositories for metadata sharing, publishing and archiving. OAI
develops and promotes a low-barrier interoperability framework and associated
standards based upon open protocols. In the OAI model, a data provider maintains one or more
repositories through web servers that support the OAI-PMH as a means of
exposing metadata; a service provider
issues OAI-PMH requests to data providers and uses the metadata as a basis for
building value-added services. With the emerging of the Internet during 1990s,
as a blooming star in the galaxy of information, the long cherished desire for
accessing to the vast gamut of information in the required field free of cost

Internet, a true powerful communication stream has altered the entire

increasing inter-disciplinary research, multi dimensional and relevant
information of the scholars in alternation to the traditional publishing
propagated for precipitation to the Open Archives Initiatives. The paper throws
light on the Open Access Initiatives
