PROMOTING PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICES THROUGH LIBRARY LEGISLATION IN INDIA: A STUDY

Library legislation in public domain has become imperative in view of proliferating information services through dissemination of knowledge for a sustainable society. It is primarily intended to educate the society by way of free flow of information. Library legislation has been accepted as a global issue and various learned institutions, professional associations and intellectuals feeling the necessity of library services made all out effort to legalize it and pressurized the authorities in both state and central level to promulgate library legislation. Library legislation in India equally has been recognized mostly after its independence and as of now, there are 19 states that have legalized the library services. The paper discusses various issues of the library legislation including its implementation status in various states
