CHANGING DIMENSIONS OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN ICT ERA

Technology has been recognized as a powerful and indispensable tool for widening the frontier of library services and professional development. The technology based library services is connoted to digital transformation which does not confine to the technology use only but also it is about the utilizing the technology to empower the library professionals and the users also. Its’ impact has been seriously felt in library and information services due to the uprising demands from the users with regard to resources in electronic form and more particularly in view of the availability of versatile and abundant information in electronic form which caused  various enigmas to perceive the relevant, trustworthy information for the libraries. Hence, to meet the constant, challenging and versatile demands of the user community due to multidimensional learning, inter-disciplinary research etc., the technologies were recognized as a driving force in the libraries. In such a situation, only option left out for the library is to convert the digital library and accept the change in a challenging way. The digital library is a solution not only for quality dissemination of knowledge in a network environment but also a viable podium for storage of information for future use. In the networking sphere, the Internet made a constructive contribution to establish the true image of Digital Libraries in shape of electronic storage of information, retrieval, document delivery, accessing of information through various databases, inter-library-loan, acquisition, price control transfer of files, transfer of information etc. The library professionals in such an altering scenario compromise in spite of resistances and provide support to both in-house and distance learners with resources. This paper discusses the application of intelligent technologies in various dimensions of library services and capacity building of the library professionals in a changing environment.
